How to clean an oven
There’s a fairly simple and repeatable formula when it comes to oven cleaning. Be warned, that doesn’t necessarily mean cleaning the oven is going to be easy, though. That’s why there are professionals to do the work for you.
If you’re feeling brave, here’s the process.
- Get your rubber gloves on and make sure your oven is turned off and cool.
- Soak the oven shelves in warm soapy water, or (if you’re using an oven cleaner) spray your cleaning product and leave the solution to work on the grease.
- Grab a small brush and sweep away any loose dirt or burnt food from inside the oven.
- Cover any electrical or heating elements and spray your oven cleaner or apply a homemade bicarbonate of soda solution. Leave the cleaning product to work for as long as possible.
- Attempt a first pass with a sponge, before resorting to a scourer on stubborn patches.
- Take care on glass doors – strong chemicals can tarnish them, so rely on hot soapy water if you can. Use a glass scraper rather than a scourer, which could leave scratches.
- Finally, rinse away any cleaning detergent or bicarb thoroughly with a water-soaked sponge, and dry all accessible areas with a tea towel or an old hand towel (which you don’t mind getting slightly grubby).
Oven cleaning equipment
It’s important to have the right tools for the job before getting stuck into an oven cleaning marathon.
You’ll need the following:
- Oven cleaner or bicarbonate of soda
- Scourers, sponges and an old toothbrush
- Plastic bags for rubbish (and to protect heating elements)
- Rubber gloves
- A bucket filled with clean water

Ovens can be expensive appliances, so it pays to make sure your oven cleaner has the necessary cover in case they accidentally cause any damage. From scratches through to water spills on electrical elements, cleaning might sound innocuous enough, but mistakes can happen.

We have an old cast iron bath and had the bath panels to fix to it. We didn't feel confident doing it ourselves as it was quite a tricky job. Lukasz took time to get the measurements and the cutting was perfect. Looks great. Also we asked him to fix the old original bathroom door which has never closed shut. He put new hinges and shaved it and now it shuts. He did some plastering too. It took a day and charged his day rate (£150) plus a little extra for the hinges, plaster and frame. Great job!
